Wave Rock

Located near the Wheatbelt town of Hyden, is one of Australia’s most recognisable landforms.

Rising 15 metres from the ground and more than 100 metres long, the rock looks like a giant surf wave of multicoloured granite about to crash onto the bush below. It’s believed this amazing formation was more than 2,700 million years in the making.

Located 340 kilometres south-east of Perth, a four hour drive through picturesque farmland.

More than 2.7 billion years of wind and rainwater erosion has created a towering 110-metre-long break.

Wave Rock (Nyungar: Katter Kich) is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The “wave” is about 15 m (50 ft) high and around 110 m (360 ft) long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as “Hyden Rock”.

This hill, which is a granite inselberg, lies about 3 km (2 mi) east of the small town of Hyden and 296 km (184 mi) east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia.

Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 160 ha (395-acre) nature reserve, Hyden Wildlife Park. More than 100,000 tourists visit every year.

Hippo’sYawn

Hippo’s Yawn is located near Wave Rock in Hyden. The rocks resemblance to a yawning hippo is why it was given its’ name. Climb through the throat of Hippo’s Yawn and be sure to catch the interesting shot on camera.

Mulka’s Cave

Mulka’s Cave is located within the vicinity of Wave Rock in Hyden Western Australia. The name Mulka comes from an Aboriginal legend associated with the cave. Mulka was the illegal son of a woman who fell in love with a man with whom marriage was forbidden according to their law.

It is believed that as a result of breaking these rules, she bore a son with crossed eyes. Even though he grew to be an outstandingly strong man of colossal height, his crossed eyes prevented him from aiming a spear accurately and becoming a successful hunter.

Out of frustration, it is said Mulka turned to catching and eating human children and he became the terror of the district. He lived in Mulka’s Cave, where the imprints of his hands can still be seen, much larger and higher than that of an ordinary man.
